AI Advertising is Here and People are Upset
Dear Artisan,
Remember all that talk about AI taking people’s jobs? Well, it’s here, and people are upset.
Under Armour lit the fuse today by dropping an AI-powered ad that involved essentially no humans.
Let’s dive in.

AI Did This
Longtime readers know that one of the things I am most passionate about as it relates to AI is the idea of decentralizing Hollywood. With the amazing creative tools at everyone’s fingertips today and massive social networks that make distribution as easy as the click of a button, it makes no sense for media production to be confined to one city in the entire world.
Well, it looks like that future is here and Hollywood is big mad about it.
Under Armour recently asked their creative agency to make an ad featuring their athlete, boxer Anthony Joshua. According to the ad’s creative director, the request was to make the spot with existing resources.
No access to the athlete, no new footage, only existing video and whatever AI tools the team wanted to use.
Now, is this the greatest ad in the world? No.
But it’s also not bad, and better than 90% of the garbage we saw in this year’s Super Bowl. And this is before OpenAI has even dropped their text to video model Sora.
What’s so interesting about this is what the director had to say about the work in the face of tons of controversy (mostly in the Instagram comments).
The future is brands training Ai on their products, athletes, aesthetics + repurposing existing footage bases + using Ai to do more with less in less time
To me, this is what the Renaissance is all about. Putting a Hollywood film studio in everyone’s pocket. Some people may see this as a displacement of the current order, of people losing jobs, but I see this as classic creative destruction.
A technological force is coming and providing heaps of opportunity to those willing to grab it, which is bound to disturb the status quo.
That is a great thing.
