AI Brings a Dead Comedian Back to Life with a Comedy Special
Until it Gets Sued and Shut Down
Dear Artisan,
George Carlin was a legend in the entertainment industry.
Few people told it like it was and held truth to power like him, and he did it until his dying day. So, it makes sense that with the tools at our disposal, people would bring him back and see what he might have to say about today’s world.
So they did. And then they got sued.
Let’s dive in.

The One Big Thing
As we have seen over and over, as AI models get stronger, there is a big battle brewing over IP rights between legacy creators and new technology companies.
Sometimes, those creators can even be dead.
Enter George Carlin and his estate. A few months back a podcast named Dudesy created a full stand-up special in the voice and likeness of George Carlin. The quality was mid, but the concept is interesting. Anyone remember that hologram of Tupac at Coachella a decade ago?
Well in this case, it turns out Carlin’s estate is not too happy. In January, Carlin's estate filed a lawsuit against the Dudesy podcast, accusing them of violating the performer's right to publicity and infringing on copyright.
This comes the same day that a series of musicians like Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, Katy Perry and others signed a letter against inappropriate AI music.
All of this is happening before OpenAI even releases their audio or voice models, which are bound to create another level of mayhem altogether.
Anyways, it seems nobody has the answer to this issue right now, but the stakes are only going to get higher as time goes on and the technology gets more powerful and omnipresent.
