The One Big Thing
Say Goodbye to Your Comfy Tech Job
Look in the eye of the machine that will replace you
It’s really time to pack it up now.
While we’ve been talking about AI replacing humans for a while now, Devin, the newest release from Cognition AI, might just be the one that does it.
The Basics:
Devin is the world's first fully autonomous AI software engineer that can independently complete complex engineering tasks and fix mistakes
Devin has developer tools like a shell, code editor, and a browser in a sandboxed environment
It collaborates with users in real-time, accepting feedback and discussing design choices
It is capable of learning new technologies, building and deploying apps, finding and fixing bugs, and even training its own AI models
In a benchmark test, Devin resolved 13.86% of issues on its own, a significant leap from the previous 1.96% by other models.
Devin's emergence as a capable, autonomous participant in the software development process completely shifts how we think about building and deploying technology.
This is a moment that everyone knew would come at some point, but nobody knew how or when. After seeing videos of the Cognition AI founder in a math competition at age 14, it seems obvious that he’s the guy to do it.

the idea that 10x/100x engineers don’t exist is such a cope

Watch that video and tell me we are not absolutely cooked.
On a more serious note, what Devin does is completely democratize high-level software engineering. This levels the playing field in a way that challenges the current hierarchies within the tech industry. Small startups now have the potential to execute projects that would have required the resources of major corporations. This redistribution of developmental capacity is bound to stir up competitive dynamics, making it an amazing time for innovation and entrepreneurship.
With the advent of Devin, the nature of moats has been transformed. In a world where advanced software engineering becomes a given, the true differentiator becomes the ability to creatively and strategically deploy these AI resources. It's no longer just about who can attract the best human talent; it's about who can best integrate and leverage AI capabilities to augment human creativity and innovation.
We're entering an era where the constraints on what can be imagined and executed are being radically expanded. The challenge now is to navigate this new landscape, where the integration of human and artificial intelligence will drive the next wave of technological advancement.
This is the sort of AI advancement that industry insiders have been speculating (warning?) about, and it’s finally starting to arrive. The future is about to get weird.

Devin is 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 at data extraction. Over the past few weeks, I've been scraping data from different blogs and Devin
1. writes the scraper to navigate the website
2. executes the code
3. returns a labeled CSV fileDevin is a multi-step agent that actually works 🤯

0% Devin, 100% Amazing
1\ We built a 3D simulation of a small town populated by fully autonomous AI agents inspired by @joon_s_pk's Stanford Generative Agents paper. We called it TownWorld and live streamed it to Twitch

Okay back to Devin
Two weeks ago, I had Devin build a small SMS website summarizer and deploy it via Twilio. I was very impressed how autonomous it was.
My favorite part about Devin is that it feels very collaborative. Almost like a human co-worker.
My prediction is that being a strong engineer… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
