Deep Dive into Grok by X AI

Today’s newsletter is going to be a little different.

Normally, we talk about the most important things happening in AI, and how you can use them to improve your work or your life. Today, we will dive deep into one tool and break down how it works, where it’s helpful, and how you can use it in your daily life.

The subject today: Grok, by Elon Musk’s X AI.

Let’s dive in:

About one week ago, Elon Musk announced that X would be open sourcing the code for its Grok foundation model, and making the service available to all premium X members.

Today, we will be diving in to how the tool works and how to optimize it for your own needs:

The first thing to notice here is that, unlike ChatGPT or most chat applications out there, Grok comes with a page of suggestions that you can pursue, all related to real-time events happening around the world.

This is the true power of Grok. Not only are you using an AI model, you are using an AI model that knows the types of content you like to view, and offers you suggestions to dive deeper into any one of those.

Of course, you can also prompt Grok about whatever else is on your mind, but this is something unique that not many other platforms will be able to offer. The other notable thing here is the switch on the top saying “Regular Mode.”

If you toggle that switch down, you will see a view called “Fun Mode.” More on this later.

Let’s say I want to learn more about the inflation headline above. I simply click, and Grok starts the conversation for me, and gives me a high level summary of what I just saw.

Then, it follows up with a reel of tweets that are relevant to the topic.

Okay, fine. This is sort of useful. But not that different from Claude or GPT-4. So what exactly is new or interesting about this model?

Well, let me show you.

For one, Grok generally has no limits. I typed in a simple question about an event that happened on X last night and Grok got…risque.

You will never see this sort of response from an OpenAI or Google product, I will bet you that much.

The other big differentiator here is the access to instant, on the minute data, that you can not get anywhere else on the internet. Try asking Chat-GPT or Claude about specific tweets - they can not access them.

This, in the end, is what gives Grok such an advantage over anything that is out there today. I can ask Grok about an event that happened 30 minutes ago (like the inflation print), and it can not only summarize the events for me, but provide the most up to date commentary that is likely to be relevant to me.

Talk about a disruption to the classic news and media businesses.
