Google: $2 Trillion and Scrambling
Dear Artisan,
We live in a loud world. And to survive in a loud world, sometimes you have to be the loudest voice in the room.
Even when you have nothing to say.
That feels like the spot Google is in right now. For about two years now, the world has been waiting for Google to have its AI moment. Instead, it had a bunch of gaffes. Now, the strategy seems to be changing. Make a bunch of noise and deliver very little of substance.
Let’s dive in.
Hot Off The Press
Google Announces Suite of New AI Tools and Plan Upgrades
Meta Set to Release Two Small Versions of Llama 3 Next Week

The One Big Thing
What stands out in the screenshot above?
Maybe the fact that the word Google is in every headline on the TechCrunch AI page? When I first saw this, I had to check if TechCrunch had been acquired by Alphabet.
These are the actions of a company that has nothing of substance to deliver to its users. While recent releases of Gemini have been promising in certain instances, there is almost nobody who thinks Google is in the lead, or even contending, in the AI race right now.
ChatGPT has thrown its decades-long business model into question, and challengers like Perplexity - while still very small - are in the rear view mirror re-imagining what a next generation search experience might look like.
It just goes to show that in the tech business, no lead is big enough. Even if you have $2 trillion and the greatest talent in the world, you still might lose a 3-1 lead to a scrappy upstart.

AI is coming not only for Hollywood but Bollywood as well…
I know everyone's been saying this a lot, but this is not clickbait, this is absolutely WILD.
This entire Bollywood song's audio was generated by AI.
I just can't believe it. My jaw is floored. What have we done. I thought music would be one of the final frontiers.
