How to Make AI Music (That Pops!)
Dear Artisan,
Today, we continue our journey in learning about new AI tools in a hands-on way and seeing what we can create while doing so.
The focus of today’s exploration is AI Music.
Last week, we wrote in the newsletter about clips of new AI generated music surfacing on X and Reddit, with rumors that NVIDIA’s new audio foundation model was powering them. Turns out, that was not the case, and the samples come from a new startup called Udio.
This week, they released their beta version to the public, and it spits out some pretty amazing tracks.
Let’s dive in.
AI-generated music is not new (relatively speaking). This wave blew up last year when a leak of an AI-generated track featuring the Weeknd and Drake popped up and went viral. The track was damn good, too.
Since then, players like Suno.ai have emerged and taken this movement mainstream to the tune of hundreds of thousands of users.
Today, we will break down how to make an AI-generated song yourself using the newest - and probably best - player in the game, Udio.com.
Now, there are multiple ways to approach this. The UIs have gotten simple enough to the point where you can prompt a simple one sentence query, and it will spit out something that’s pretty incredible.
This was the output for my prompt, “a Bollywood song about a pair of AIs traversing the universe, looking for adventure and love.”
I mean, that’s ridiculous.
But we can take it further. The interface lets you go into “manual mode,” where the application will not alter the model at all, and just create an output based on your prompt. Additionally, it gives you the ability to choose a genre for your music, custom lyrics, as well as the capability to go fully instrumental if you choose.
For this song, I asked ChatGPT to come up with lyrics and opted for manual mode to see what the model outputted.
And… voila. Here’s my new track:
Yeah, this one is… not so great. Hard to tell if that is because I fed it English lyrics for a Bollywood song or because of the auto / manual mode toggle.
Regardless, this technology is pretty mind-blowing. The tool is free, and lets you create 4 songs per day at no cost.
Get to it!
