OpenAI's Sora is Coming for Hollywood

Dear Artisan,

If the demos are real, Sora is going to be bigger than ChatGPT. It’s not even going to be close.

For the past few months OpenAI has been working with artists and creators to test their video model, Sora, to provide feedback and improve the model. Today, they released a series of demo videos on what those creators have produced. The results are mind blowing.

Let’s dive in.

Hot Off The Press

The One Big Thing

Humans are a fundamentally visual species.

And for how impressive AI developments have been over the past two years, large language models don’t hit you as viscerally as some other tech innovations because they do not engage our visual senses at all.

Well, all of that is changing at dramatic speed. We have recently talked about audio models that allow anyone to be a songwriter or music producer. We have talked plenty of times about improving image models and touched on Sora, the video model that OpenAI has been teasing for over 6 weeks now.

Today, we have our best display of what this model might be capable of.

The striking thing about all of these demos (click into the link in the tweet to see all of them) is just how varied the outputs are. You can see the stylistic differences in the artists’ minds, and the videos reflect that.

There is no cookie-cutter formula the model is pulling from. Each video has its own unique flavor, and it very much comes through that a specific artist directed this in their image.

This is a very interesting demonstration, given a recent quote from another leader in the industry, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, who recently stated that engineers in the future will be architects of program design rather than simply coders.

These developments are all headed toward the same place: the ability for any individual to make magic from the tips of their fingers. We are quickly accelerating to that world, and the amount of creativity it will unlock is staggering.
